The Smithfield School Committee heard on Nov. 6 that Thomas Smith Field was awarded a $40,000 Learn365 Round 4 grant from Governor McKee to support local Math Matters Rhode Island initiatives.
The superintendent presented the update, saying the $40,000 award will be split between the school department and the YMCA to fund after-school tutoring and a series of math-adventure camps during school breaks. "The Thomas Smith Field was awarded $40,000 through the Learn 3 65 Round 4 Grama, provided by Governor McKee," the superintendent said. The superintendent added the funds require a community-based partner, and that the YMCA will coordinate some of the programming.
Officials said funds will be used for tutoring at multiple grade levels, with some ELA tutoring supported by an earlier round of funding; the district expects to begin programming immediately. The superintendent noted that all funds must be spent by June 2026.
Next steps: the district and YMCA will finalize program plans and scheduling for tutoring and math adventure camps; the superintendent said the district will present results or reports to the committee when available.
