West Jefferson awarded $1.33 million SmBIZ grant for sidewalks, sewer lining and water tank work

Town Manager Brantley Price reported that the Town of West Jefferson was awarded $1,327,900 through the North Carolina Department of Commerce SmBIZ grant to fund sidewalk repair, sewer lining and a water tank project at the wastewater filter plant.
Price told the board that the town also has an obligation of $67,000 to reimburse administrative costs under Category Z and that the permit to begin work on North Church has been received. He reported that the UV system has been installed at the wastewater treatment plant but staff are still waiting on pumps; two generators for the wells have been ordered with expected delivery before June 30. Completion of the sewer line installation work on Ridge Avenue is now weather dependent.
Price also provided budget and community updates: taxes collected to date equal 94.2% of the levy, December sales tax showed a 2% decrease, and year‑to‑date sales tax is up 4% from the prior year. He noted that Paddy Mountain trail had 300 visitors in February and listed several upcoming community events that will use town facilities.
The board did not take separate action on the grant award at the meeting; staff will proceed with grant administration and project scheduling.
