Mahaska County supervisors approve routine items, open recodification hearing after public comments

The Mahaska County Board of Supervisors on March 16 approved a series of routine measures and opened a public hearing to consider recodifying county ordinances.

The meeting, held in the courthouse third-floor conference room, included unanimous votes to approve minutes for multiple February and March meetings; a Class “E” retail alcohol license and a retail tobacco license for Hotel O; an intergovernmental law enforcement agreement with the City of Eddyville; the Sheriff’s February 2026 financial report; a payroll change allowing I.R.V.M. to hire seasonal staff through Dec. 31, 2026; the annual notice of destruction of noxious weeds; and action on a FOIA request. Most motions were moved and seconded by Member Chuck Webb and Vice Chair Steve Wanders and were recorded as "all ayes."

The board also opened a public hearing on recodifying county ordinances. During that hearing residents raised several requested edits: Micah Van Mersbergen asked for revisions to ordinance 37; Andy Alexander and Dave Meinders urged changes to right-of-way coding and distance rules; and Leroy Groenendyk requested clearer language for a grandfather clause. The transcript records those requests but does not show any committee or staff response or a vote on ordinance language at this meeting.

Why it matters: Recodification can reframe how the county defines and enforces local rules, and public requests to change specific provisions signal areas of local concern (right-of-way regulation and grandfathering language).
