Board approves tentative capital projects list; members ask for clearer yearly priorities

The Nassau County School Board on Sept. 12 approved the tentative 2024–25 list of capital projects but heard extended questioning from board members about which projects will actually start in the coming year and which are multi-year rollovers.

Board member Gauss cited the list’s aggregate figure — about $111,000,000 — and asked staff to clarify priorities so the board and the public can tell which projects will proceed this fiscal year and which will remain on a multi-year schedule. "What are the priorities this year?" Gauss asked, noting some projects are in design while others have materials ordered.

District staff responded that projects on the list are in various stages of progress: some are already advancing (parts ordered, materials on hand) while others are earlier in design. Staff told the board that if a project appears on the list it is intended to move forward but that implementation timing varies; the board asked for a clearer master plan to help answer constituent questions about schedules.

Members also asked about recent work at specific sites: staff confirmed portables at Wildlight had been moved in and temporary power was in use; permanent electrical panels are expected to be installed around December because of long lead times for panels and equipment.

The board moved to approve the capital projects list after the discussion. Staff committed to preparing a more detailed multi-year master plan and a prioritized schedule that identifies which projects are expected to start in the coming fiscal year.

Next steps: maintenance/operations staff will deliver the requested multi-year plan and a clearer prioritized schedule for board review.
