The Nassau County School Board on Sept. 12 approved a package of routine policies, personnel actions and contracts and moved to hold a closed litigation meeting related to a pending employment lawsuit.
Items the board approved by motion and voice vote included: the 2024–25 student progression plan for grades K–5, 6–8 and 9–12; the 2024–26 school health services plan; the 2024–25 student code of conduct; the appointment of Jennifer Gauss as a hospital/homebound teacher at Hilliard Elementary (with a recusal noted for Mr. Gauss because the appointee is his wife); an agreement with Talk of the Town Speech Therapy LLC to provide contracted speech therapy services; and the 2024–25 capital projects budget.
Dr. Cathy Burns recommended each item in turn and board members moved, seconded and approved the proposals by voice vote. When the hospital/homebound appointment was considered, the chair stated Mr. Gauss would not vote because the appointee is his wife.
The board also voted to enter a closed litigation meeting (a 'shade meeting') to discuss a pending civil action and reconvened afterward to hear counsel read a tentative settlement. Counsel described the settlement in the Joinville employment suit and the board approved the settlement terms by voice vote; counsel said NEFEC would cover the settlement payment and defense costs.
