Sunset Beach ERC shifts focus to oyster restoration, living shorelines and public workshops

Committee members discussed refocusing the marine and climate subcommittee on living shorelines, oyster restoration and shorebird habitat as actionable projects for 2026. One member urged using John Farrell’s coastal resiliency plan as a foundational document and asked that Farrell or another expert present background material to the committee so new members could catch up.

Several members emphasized public education: they proposed a lecture/workshop series (a mixture of in-person and remote presentations) to bring subject-matter experts to town without requiring travel, and suggested recording sessions at the community center for broader access. The committee discussed involving NC State and other regional research groups and noted constraints on in-person graduate support but said remote participation and occasional local accommodations might help.

Oyster restoration and living shorelines were framed as both resilience measures and public-involvement opportunities. A member warned that local waterways are showing signs of decline — "we're on a tipping point, and no one's paying attention to it" — and urged the committee to pursue outreach and demonstrable projects to engage property owners about shoreline alternatives to seawalls.

Members agreed the subcommittees should continue meeting outside the full ERC, consistent with quorum and sunshine rules, and asked staff and volunteers to prioritize a schedule of workshops and a list of potential presenters. John Farrell’s plan and follow-up grant opportunities (RCCP or county match funds) were identified as items the marine subcommittee should review and use to shape grant proposals and outreach materials.
