Morgan Township fire chief reports surge in calls; trustees approve $7,500 training purchase order

Mark Minery opened the report with employee anniversaries and asked trustees for a purchase order to the Ohio Fire Chiefs Association for $7,500 from fund code 2281 for Captain Myers to attend the Ohio Fire Executive Class. He noted the requested amount may be reduced because Captain Myers received a $3,000 scholarship this year and could apply for additional scholarships in future years. Trustees moved, seconded and approved the purchase order request.
Chief Griffith provided operational statistics, reporting 72 responses in March — one of the highest monthly totals he could recall — and that year-to-date responses were up 27% (182 responses this year versus 143 last year). He said March had more fire incidents than EMS calls and that overlapping calls (“double taps”) have increased, with four overlapping calls in the month and 12 in three months, more than the department recorded in the prior year. He reported turnout times and said the department completed 180 hours of fire training last month; he praised community partners for providing vehicles used during training.
Trustees approved the training purchase order and thanked department personnel for prompt response to a recent mitigation job at the 1858 Building, where costs were lower than anticipated.
What happens next: the fiscal office will process the purchase order and apply any scholarship offset; the fire department continues to monitor call-volume trends and will report back as needed.
