The San Bernardino City Unified School District board approved the assistant superintendent for human resources employment contract as amended to change the start date to Sept. 2 and approved multiple personnel appointments after brief discussion and questions from trustees.
During consideration of agenda item 5.4, a board member asked, "is a $950 monthly housing allowance normal for our executive cabinet and assistant supe[rintendents]?" (Board member, speaker 4). District staff responded that the stipend appears only to be active if the employee resides in the city of San Bernardino: "you're only eligible for the stipend if you live in the city in order to get that stipend" (staff member, speaker 20). Staff said the contract language mirrors the standard assistant superintendent contract already used in the district and agreed to provide the board a copy of the contract in the Friday update.
Trustees noted that not approving the contract would delay the new hire's start date and that the advertised pay should be honored. After discussion and the promised follow-up, the board voted to approve the contract so the appointee could begin on Sept. 2.
The board also approved several personnel actions that were reported out of closed session and on the agenda:
- Appointment of Marina Hernandez as elementary school vice principal (George Brown Junior Elementary School); effective date, work year and salary to be determined. (motioned by Miss Medina; seconded by Missus Alexander; motion carried).
- Appointment of Kayla Schrock as Coordinator, Special Education ' Academic Instruction; effective date, work year and salary to be determined.
- Appointment of Brandy Barbee as Coordinator, Special Education ' Preschool; effective date, work year and salary to be determined.
The board also approved the readmission of specified students consistent with board rules and a cited education code provision and voted on routine consent and compensation items, including compensation approvals for board members where recusals were noted on the record.
Next steps: staff will include the assistant superintendent contract language in the Friday update as requested by trustees.
