The Brentwood Union Free School District Board of Education voted April 16 to adopt a proposed budget for the 2026–27 school year and directed the district clerk to include the adopted amount in the legal notice and on the ballot for the annual election on May 19, 2026.
In presenting the measure, the Chair said the budget “does not exceed the statutory levy cap.” The figures read aloud at the meeting described the plan as roughly $727 million and stated a tax levy of $118,389,147. The transcript contains small transcription fragments in the readout of the exact total; the board’s action was to adopt the figure as presented and send it to voters for the May 19 vote.
Board members moved and seconded the motion to adopt the proposed budget; the board approved the adoption by voice vote. The clerk was directed to include the adopted amount in the legal notice and in the proposition for the annual election and budget vote.
Why it matters: The district’s budget and the tax levy define spending and local tax burden for the coming school year. By adopting the proposal and placing it on the ballot, the board set the public referendum that will decide whether the spending plan and levy will take effect.
What’s next: The budget hearing is scheduled for May 7, 2026, and the budget and candidate vote is set for May 19, 2026. If voters approve the proposition, the district will implement the 2026–27 budget as adopted; if voters reject it, the district must follow New York state procedures for a rejected budget.
