The Oscoda County Board of Commissioners on Aug. 26 approved a slate of routine fiscal adjustments, authorized two airport purchases and granted temporary additional hours for two district court magistrates.
The board approved the consent calendar, which included multiple budget line amendments across county departments—adding a jury-duty trust line, increasing training and dues lines for government administration, reallocating funds for legal consultation in the Economic Development Corporation budget, and several inter-line transfers within Trial Courts and Ambulance budgets. The board also received the July 2025 expenditure report, which showed a grand total of $1,501,996.84 across county funds.
In airport business, Airport Manager Brian Smutek requested and the board authorized purchase of a 2,500-gallon horizontal storage tank from Highland Tank LLC for $16,554 and awarded a $12,185 scope-of-work contract to Oscar W. Larson (OWL Services). Both purchases were authorized with payment deferred to the 2026 calendar year and charged to airport capital and contracted services lines, respectively. The two airport items total $28,739.
The board approved an addition to the agenda to allow District Magistrate Shannon Wickham and District Deputy Clerk & Magistrate Tiffany Palek to work up to 40 hours per week as needed while the District Court Clerk is on medical leave; that staffing authorization will be reassessed by the Trial Court Administrator and the county administrator.
The board also accepted sealed bids for a 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe (VIN 1GNFK03089R180554), awarding the vehicle to Tom McCauley for $4,625 and directing proceeds to the Sheriff equipment fund. McCauley recused himself from discussion and the vote on that item; the other commissioners voted to carry the motion.
During public comment, EMS Director Bob Stankiewicz announced a paramedic class beginning Sept. 3, 2025 that will include six Oscoda County EMTs. A Zoom participant identified as Daniel asked about sealed bids awarded at the Aug. 12 meeting for a 2006 Ford Expedition and a 2003 Chevrolet Blazer.
