Summary
Trustees voted to co‑sponsor a Jan. 26 anti‑human‑trafficking play and heard resident complaints and debate over Danka's Basketball League hours and facility use; staff will follow up and bring items back to a future meeting.
Maywood, Ill. — At the Jan. 15 meeting, trustees approved a request to add the Village of Maywood as a co‑sponsor on promotional materials for a Jan. 26 play about human trafficking and discussed several resident concerns and recreational‑facility usage requests.
Gay Chase, co‑chair of the Political Awareness and Involvement Committee for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, requested the village be listed as a co‑sponsor for a play at Thurgood Marshall School in Bellwood on Jan. 26; the board approved the request with a motion by Trustee I. Brandon and a second by Trustee M. Lightford.
Trustees also noted complaints from Senior Club members regarding treatment by Larry Shapiro; because the complainants were absent, the board did not hear testimony and agreed to return the matter to a future meeting so affected residents may appear. Water Commission issues raised in a letter from Linda Reedy were discussed by trustees and Water Commissioner Robinson; Ms. Reedy was not present and trustees directed staff to bring the item back.
The board addressed a request from Danka's Basketball League to extend gym hours and add Sunday usage at the Multipurpose Building. Village staff raised concerns about building cleanliness, staffing, security and liability; Trustee A. Sanchez questioned safety and curfew enforcement. Mayor Perkins said Sunday use was not part of the existing program and would follow up with Mr. Winters and bring the item back for further consideration.
What happens next: The co‑sponsorship will be reflected on event materials and staff will return the Senior Club complaint, Water Commission letter and Danka facility‑use request to a future board meeting for additional input and decision.
