Satellite Beach Youth Council sets early priorities: lagoon cleanups, social media outreach and community events

At its first official meeting, the Satellite Beach Youth Council spent substantial time brainstorming priorities, with members and staff suggesting projects to raise youth involvement and address local environmental concerns.

Multiple members proposed environmental activities tied to the Indian River Lagoon: organized lagoon cleanups, oyster-mat placement and mangrove plantings at local parks. Members suggested recruiting students from area high schools and using social media and posters to promote participation.

Serena Videla offered to serve as secretary and said she could help with outreach and poster design. Several members volunteered to form a social-media team; they favored Instagram to reach peers while keeping a Facebook presence to reach parents. City manager Courtney Barker and staff explained that the city captures social-media content as public record and offered technical support and a small start-up budget for projects.

Other proposals included refillable water-bottle stations in schools, anti-vaping and anti-bullying campaigns, involvement in existing events such as the fire department's holiday programs and the Ocean Reef Festival, and a storm-drain mural/adopt-a-drain initiative modeled on a similar project in Clearwater. Members agreed to draft mission statements and bring concrete proposals to the next meeting for potential motions and votes.

"Maybe we start thinking about our vision tonight," one member said, urging the council to prioritize youth involvement and environmental stewardship. Staff urged coordination with existing adult boards (beautification, sustainability) to increase impact and avoid duplicating city programs.

The council did not take formal action on projects at the meeting but identified several initiatives to develop further and report on at the next scheduled meeting.
