Canton considers annexing 163.5 acres for light-industrial development in Ward 4

The Canton City Council on June 2 discussed a proposed annexation covering about 163.5 acres at the southeast corner of Central and Millerton, recommending assignment to Ward 4 and zoning as I‑1 (light industry).
Staff told council the annexation is intended to make land available for future industrial development and cited potential job creation and tax revenue as motivating factors. The city does not yet have a developer-submitted plan; presenters said the annexation would give the city the option to offer incentives (for example certain CRA/TIF structures) and to provide utility and right‑of‑way planning. "Being that it's industrial zoning, it would have to be something that area up there," a staff presenter told council, noting that no specific use applications were on file.
Council asked procedural questions about ward assignment and potential uses; the presenter recommended assignment to Ward 4 because it abuts the property. Mayor Scherer added that the annexation would help the city acquire land it currently lacks for larger industrial projects and that potential incentives could be structured to attract jobs. No development agreement or incentive package was approved at the meeting.
Next steps: council signed the annexation matter out of committee and will include the annexation ordinance later in the evening agenda for adoption; staff said further planning and potential bidding on infrastructure would follow as interest or proposals materialize.
