Summary
The Onalaska Common Council unanimously approved installation of a mid-block crosswalk on the 400 block of Mason Street after the Board of Public Works recommended the least-cost, least-impact location; councilors said staff will notify Eagle Crest residents about impacts.
The Onalaska Common Council on April 14 voted unanimously to install a mid-block crosswalk at the 400 block of Mason Street, approving the location recommended by the Board of Public Works.
Alder Diane Wolf moved approval of the item pulled from the consent agenda; Alder Larry Juracek seconded. Jared, a public works staff member, told the council the Board of Public Works and consultant Troy Elliott of Hendrickson reviewed three potential locations and recommended the option that would be least costly and create the fewest impacts. "This item was discussed at length at the Board of Public Works a week ago," Jared said, adding staff had contacted Eagle Crest residents who requested the crosswalk and would follow up with new facility staff to discuss any impacts.
Council members asked about outreach to Eagle Crest and the sighting; Jared said staff are still coordinating with the facility's new contact. After discussion the council voted in favor. The motion passed unanimously.
The action authorizes Public Works to proceed with the crosswalk installation as presented; councilors said staff will return to the board if conditions or impacts change.
Next steps: Public Works will finalize placement details, continue outreach with Eagle Crest representatives, and bring any material changes back to the council for further review.
