Board appropriates $2.17 million for school capital projects, including auditorium renovation

The Prince Edward County Board of Supervisors voted to appropriate $2,167,745 from FY25 fund balance to support school capital projects and the renovation of the Barbara Johns Auditorium.
Cheryl Stimpson presented the carryover appropriation request, explaining part of the funds will replace rooftop HVAC units, purchase and install a chiller at the high school through a cooperative arrangement that reduced expected cost, and address fencing and other immediate capital needs across the division. Superintendent Chip Jones and other speakers emphasized the importance of these investments to maintain and improve school facilities while larger renovation work continues.
Jones estimated roughly $525,000 of the appropriation would cover immediate HVAC and chiller-related work and said remaining funds would go toward auditorium renovation and other capital items. The board moved and approved the appropriation on a roll call vote.
Next steps: staff will proceed with procurement and project scheduling and provide updates to the board as projects enter construction. The board also scheduled a site tour of the elementary and upcoming high‑school projects on April 24.
