West Jefferson plans street paving, park repairs and raises cemetery plot price to $800

Maintenance Supervisor Eric Miller presented maintenance, streets, park and cemetery priorities for FY 2026‑27 at the March 23 special meeting.
Approved aesthetic items included flowers on poles and downtown flowers/shrubs/mulch. Maintenance identified paving priorities (Long Street and Ridge Avenue resurfacing), sidewalk repairs tied to salt damage, storm drain boxes and tile replacement on School Avenue, and shop equipment needs such as a welder, bucket for a skid steer and a dump trailer.
Park requests included new weed eaters, playground mulch, insulation and heating for lower park restrooms, shelter staining and replacement of damaged wood and roofing screws, and bear‑proof trash cans. Staff proposed relocating a pipe storage lot to create parking.
For the cemetery, staff recommended increasing plot prices from $500 to $800 and reported 28 remaining plots for sale. The board recorded the beautification items (flowers and downtown landscaping) as unanimously approved during the session.
These maintenance and park items will be incorporated into the proposed budget and prioritized alongside capital projects and grant opportunities.
