The Tell City-Troy Twp School Corporation board unanimously approved a new district policy on April 14 that sets a framework for adding athletic programs and periodically evaluating existing teams.
Paul Shuttrell explained the policy was designed to ensure the district considers viability, resource needs and Title IX compliance before adding sports or altering current offerings. “That policy was designed to kind of guide that determination,” he said, noting the policy would help the district support sustainable programs.
Board members discussed the fiscal and human-resource limits of small schools, including difficulties finding coaches and officials and the cost of equipment and travel. One member said small enrollment and limited budgets make it challenging to sustain some programs.
The board voted to adopt the policy and directed administration to implement evaluation procedures and bring resources or proposals as needed. The vote was recorded as unanimous.
