Summary
The board approved four second-read policies covering meals, ADA accommodations and related updates, discussed AED training expectations and clarified SRO night-shift responsibilities; the superintendent said the policies make superintendent duties publicly visible.
The board reviewed eight policy items, including four first readings and four second readings, and approved policies 135–138 by voice vote.
Board members discussed placing certain superintendent duties into policy so the public can see the role's responsibilities rather than relying solely on contract language. A board member noted requested word changes for clarity and was told administration will address those suggested edits.
The policies under consideration included updates on charging meals for staff, federal and state updates to free meal services for students, guidance on ADA accommodation requests, and language addressing homeschool student participation in clubs and athletics. One board member asked whether homeschool students should be permitted to participate; the administration said homeschool students are not enrolled in the district, and allowing participation raises legal and liability questions under state law.
Members also asked about AED training. The superintendent said there are "definitely more than one" staff members trained in each building and encouraged more staff to take the training. A board member said district nurses and coaches are trained and principals should ensure someone on-site for after-school events holds appropriate training.
The board discussed the SRO night-shift job description drafted by the health and safety committee. The superintendent said the SRO would perform duties such as greeting visitors at the front entrance, directing people, making rounds to ensure areas are secure, and coordinating with custodial staff; the SRO would not be responsible for setting building air-conditioning controls.
Next steps: Administration will process minor word changes and implement approved policies; the SRO job description will be tracked until duties are finalized.
