Commissioners review wording on school bond referendum; Mary C. Williams not funded in proposed bond

Commissioners reviewed draft resolutions and background material for a general obligation bond referendum to fund capital needs for New Hanover County Schools and asked staff to correct typographical errors in the materials before publication.
Commissioner questions focused on whether the bond includes money to renovate or otherwise repurpose the Mary C. Williams facility. Chris said the school administration’s plan replaces Mary C. Williams with a Riverlights-area elementary and that no bond funds are currently allocated to renovate Mary C. Williams; the school system has the option to sell or hold the property after the new school opens, but any decision to put county bond dollars toward Mary C. Williams would require specific board approval.
Staff said they will correct dates and typos in the draft materials and provide clearer project lists ahead of the referendum-related resolutions being considered.
