A representative of the St. Brigid division (speaker 7) explained the organization hosts an annual Irish writing contest and said judges were surprised Walraven was in seventh grade. The presenter said the state first-place award includes a $100 prize and presented a certificate and check at the meeting. The board read a resolution commending Zander for scholarship, community service and his fundraiser work on behalf of the Angelman Syndrome Foundation.
Family members and local community leaders attended and speakers praised Zander's research and writing. The commission approved the recognition by motion and voice vote.
