Satellite Beach Youth Council outlines outreach, environmental and social-media plans

After electing leadership, the Satellite Beach Youth Council spent the remainder of its first meeting brainstorming priorities and outreach methods.
Members emphasized getting youth involved and suggested environmental projects focused on the Indian River lagoon: organized cleanups, mangrove plantings, oyster mats and partnerships with the Brevard Zoo to obtain seeds. One member proposed expanding outreach beyond Satellite High School to nearby schools and suggested poster campaigns and Instagram trivia to educate peers about lagoon health.
The council discussed an "adopt-a-drain" or storm-drain mural project (based on examples other cities have used) to highlight that drains lead to the lagoon. Staff encouraged coordinating with the city's beautification and sustainability boards and said Nick Sanzone would be a contact for sustainability-related work.
Members also explored social-media outreach and shirt designs to raise visibility. Staff cautioned that social-media accounts maintained by the youth council are public records and must be archived; the city can provide technical help and a small startup budget for council projects. The council agreed to continue work between meetings and to bring shaped mission-statement and project proposals to the next meeting.
