Alex LaFortune was elected chair of the newly formed Satellite Beach Youth Council after members moved and seconded a nomination for his appointment during the council’s first official meeting on Oct. 28, 2019. The motion to nominate LaFortune was made from the floor and the chair announced it had passed.
The election followed a short period in which members described their interest and qualifications for leadership. McKenzie Parson moved to nominate Alex LaFortune for chair; a member seconded the motion. The meeting facilitator then followed the prescribed procedure for discussion and closure before announcing the motion passed.
After the chair election, members turned to the vice chair post. Sarah Zicki moved to nominate Charlotte Barnes for vice chair and another member seconded. Alex LaFortune, acting as chair for the vote, called a roll; multiple members answered “yes” when called, and the chair announced the motion passed, electing Charlotte Barnes as vice chair.
The meeting record contains no formal roll-call tally for the chair nomination; for the vice-chair vote several members answered affirmatively by name during the roll call. The procedure the council followed reflects the city’s orientation to parliamentary steps discussed earlier in the meeting: nomination, second, discussion (if any), and vote.
Council business now moves forward under the leadership of LaFortune and Barnes; members were instructed to prepare proposals, mission-statement drafts and project ideas for the next meeting.
