The Satellite Beach Youth Council elected Alex LaFortune as chair and Charlotte Barnes as vice chair during its inaugural meeting Oct. 28.
Members opened nominations for chair after a staff orientation. McKenzie Parson moved to nominate Alex LaFortune and a fellow member seconded; the membership voted by voice and the motion passed. Alex LaFortune then presided as chair and led the nomination and vote for vice chair; a nomination for Charlotte Barnes was seconded and approved by the membership.
Webb Pierce, the city clerk, guided the group through the procedural steps required to make motions, take seconds, and conduct votes under Robert's Rules-style practice used by the council. The clerk and staff confirmed that alternates could vote when regular members were absent and reviewed the requirement that nominations be made by other members during the formal motion process.
The council did not record a roll-call tally in the transcript; the motions were carried by voice vote and declared passed. After the results were announced, Alex LaFortune assumed leadership of the meeting and staff said they would step in as needed to support the council.
