Danville reports midyear literacy gains as VALS data shows kindergarten low‑risk rate nearly doubles

Summary
At its April 2 meeting, the Danville School Board heard midyear results from the state VALS screener showing kindergarten students considered low risk rose from 21% to 48% and the district outpaced a 75-division consortium on midyear growth. Presenters outlined subgroup trends and interventions.
Miss McCraw presented the Danville Public Schools midyear results for the Virginia Language and Literacy Screening System (VALS), saying the district saw notable early gains in foundational reading. "That number doubled," Miss McCraw said of the kindergarten low‑risk rate, which rose from 21% in fall testing to 48% at midyear.
The presentation compared DPS performance with a 75-division consortium (CIP). Miss McCraw said the district moved from about 57% of students in lower‑moderate risk in the fall to 68% at midyear — approximately 19 percentage points of positive growth — while the consortium rose from 65% to 73% over the same period.
Presenters highlighted subgroup results. For students with disabilities the district recorded "exceptional growth" in third and fourth grades but mixed results in grades five through eight; English‑learner growth was strong in third and fourth grades and weaker in later grades. The presenters said the screener produces risk bands (high, moderate, low) used to place students in targeted supports and identify those who qualify for early reading intervention services.
Miss Agner and Ms. Egnor described district responses for students who remain at moderate or high risk: individualized reading plans, small‑group evidence‑based instruction, weekly progress monitoring and a combination of in‑school supports and interventions. "Those students must have a reading plan in place," a presenter said, emphasizing progress monitoring and connections to summer supports.
Board members pressed for follow‑up details. Miss Walker asked what the next steps would be for students who remain at higher risk after spring testing; the presenters said plans would be adjusted and monitored and additional clinical supports would be available. The presenters also noted a partnership with the public library that provides Danville students automatic library cards and access to online materials.
The board received the VALS midyear overview for information; no formal action was taken.
