Summary
The council read proclamations recognizing World Art Day and an inaugural Immigrant Day of Resilience; arts leaders and immigrant‑rights organizers described local programs, the county’s cultural economy, mutual aid and recent state legislative wins protecting immigrant communities.
During the afternoon session on April 14 the council’s Education & Culture Committee presented two proclamations.
For World Art Day, committee leadership and arts organization leaders from Strathmore, Roundhouse Theatre, Arts & Humanities Council and youth workforce programs highlighted arts education, free public performances and the sector’s economic role. An Arts & Humanities Council executive said the county’s cultural industry supports hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity and thousands of jobs.
The council then recognized Immigrant Day of Resilience, a new observance prompted by student advocacy. Students from Students' Fair described community mutual aid, peer support and civic engagement. Representatives of the Montgomery County Immigrant Rights Collective (MoCo IRC) and CASA described "know your rights" trainings, door‑to‑door canvassing, fundraising for impacted families and coordinated responses to federal immigration enforcement. A CASA representative noted recent state legislative action including passage of a Community Trust Act and said the county’s efforts help families feel safer.
The County Executive’s office reaffirmed support for immigrant protection initiatives and highlighted county departments and nonprofit partners providing services and outreach. Councilmembers applauded the community activists, students and nonprofit leaders and read the proclamations into the record.
These are ceremonial recognitions; speaker organizations described ongoing programs and requested continued interagency and county support for cultural and immigrant‑support services.
