GREELEY COUNTY, Neb. — County commissioners voted in October to align road‑maintenance routes with commissioner districts after a public hearing that drew many landowners and road users.
The Oct. 8 hearing included statements from residents and landowners about road classification and maintenance. After hearing testimony the board voted to align maintenance routes with the commissioner districts, a policy shift county officials said would simplify assignments of maintenance responsibility.
On Oct. 29 the board held two separate public hearings to consider vacating a roughly half‑mile portion of 491st Avenue and a described section of Salem Road. At the 491st hearing Colleen Hansen testified in favor of the vacation; no opponents appeared and the board approved the request. At the Salem Road hearing Dennis Winter testified in favor and there was no recorded opposition; the board also approved that vacation.
Highway Superintendent Lance Harter had earlier been directed to study a portion of 491st Avenue and submit a written report with recommendations. The board adopted the required resolutions to set public‑hearing dates and, following the hearings, recorded the vacation orders in the county minutes.
Next steps: County staff will record the formal vacation documents, update maintenance route maps to reflect the new alignment with commissioner districts, and work with adjacent landowners where rights‑of‑way were vacated.
