Wayne County supervisors back Sept. ballot for one-cent local option sales tax, set budget hearing and approve appointments

The Wayne County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously March 31 to ask voters in the unincorporated portions of Wayne County to decide whether to impose a new one-cent local option sales and services tax, and set a public hearing on the county's fiscal 2027 budget.
The board passed Resolution No. 26-23, introduced by Chair Chris Moore, requesting that the question be submitted to the Wayne County Commissioner of Elections for placement on a special election ballot on Sept. 8, 2026, or as soon thereafter as possible. The resolution notes an existing one-cent local option tax in the unincorporated county will expire Dec. 31, 2027, and the new tax would take effect Jan. 1, 2028, if approved by voters.
Why it matters: the tax would replace revenue that is due to lapse at the end of 2027; approval would preserve a one-cent local option levy for unincorporated Wayne County and could affect county services and budgeting.
The board also set the FY27 county budget public hearing for Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. in the Wayne County Courthouse lower-level conference room. Lance Lange moved to set the hearing and Todd Wilson seconded; the motion passed unanimously.
Other formal actions included Chair Moore's motion, seconded by Lange, to approve the appointment of Dr. Ryan Arnevik, DO, and Dr. Justin Morgan, DO, as deputy medical examiners, which the board approved without objection.
