Summary
Two USC social-work interns asked the Lawndale board to publish a comprehensive domestic-violence resource list on the district website, provide printed pamphlets at schools, and equip staff with referral guides; trustees and cabinet directed them to district student-support staff for follow-up.
Two social-work interns from the University of Southern California asked the Lawndale Elementary School District board on April 16 to make domestic-violence resources more visible and accessible to families.
Ian Henderson Slack and Vanessa Villegas said the district website currently lists only a 24-hour crisis hotline and urged the board to publish a comprehensive list of local shelters, counseling services and community providers — available in multiple languages — and to provide printed pamphlets in school offices for discreet access. "A comprehensive list of domestic violence resources has already been compiled," the interns said, adding that the district could move quickly to post and distribute it.
Board members and cabinet replied that the appropriate next steps include connecting with the director of student support services, Alberto Paredes, and the district social worker Maria Ruedas. The superintendent's office noted the community schools initiative has compiled resource lists from the district needs assessment and that staff would help coordinate referrals.
The board did not take formal action during the meeting, but staff were asked to follow up with the interns and provide contact information and referral guidance.
Next steps: the interns were encouraged to meet with district student-support staff and the district said staff would assist in posting resources and preparing discreet printed materials for families.
