The Kansas City Council voted unanimously to excuse President Bates Alward and council member Hawke from the evening's meeting and observed a moment of silence for Hawke, a Ward 1 councilman who has died.
Council President opened the meeting, called the roll and presided over two motions to excuse absent members. After a roll-call vote, the clerk announced 11 ayes and the president declared, “The motion carries and President Bates Alward is excused from this evening's meeting.” A separate motion to excuse member Hawke passed by the same roll-call margin.
After the votes, a councilmember requested a point of order and asked for a moment of silence. The council president delivered a remembrance, saying the late Ward 1 councilman had been a “huge mentor” who “made a huge impact, and this council will not be the same without him,” and asked members to keep Hawke’s family in their thoughts.
No further action related to the vacancies was taken during the meeting. The council proceeded to other business on the agenda.
