Human Rights Commission and Park & Rec give year-end updates on outreach and amenities

Two advisory boards updated the Committee about activities and accomplishments.

Human Rights Commission staff liaison Clara Beck introduced Nancy South, who said the commission adopted a Fergus-specific declaration of human rights on May 21, 2025, produced a library installation during Welcoming Week and updated its web presence and sponsorship policy; the commission will pause regular meetings until January pending mayoral appointments. "It's a city board that works for the protection of human rights for all people and helps empower people to realize their rights through education, advocacy, and community engagement," South said.

Guy (city staff) introduced Park & Recreation board chair Lynn Walters. Walters summarized several park projects and amenities completed or under way: an archery range at Day Lagoon Park, Higgins Dog Park, bicycle playground, cross-country ski trails at Kirkbride, expanded disc golf at Roosevelt Park, Ferber Park mountain bike trail expansion, relocation of a BMX track to Day Lagoon Park, pickleball courts at Broadway Park, a downtown splash pad and a successful first season at the aquatic center. Walters described sponsorship options (benches, flowerpots, team sponsorships) and discussed outreach and signage to increase public awareness of park amenities.

Councilmembers asked questions about signage, volunteer involvement, and how citizens can sponsor benches or plantings; staff said sponsorship information is available on the city’s Park & Rec web page and via Visit Fergus Falls outreach.
