The East Brunswick Board of Education approved curriculum and operations items that administrators said will affect screening, facilities work and equipment purchases this school year.
On curriculum, the board approved a universal literacy screener for K' mandated statewide implementation and a district decision to expand screening to K—. Dr. Boley said the district selected a comprehensive product after an RFP and that "the state put out a grant, and we've applied and received funding" to support implementation; she added that the per-student purchase is unaffected by how many times students are screened. The board discussed using Title I funds for one building (Hammershoel) and using district budget funds to supplement the state grant for K—— implementation.
In operations, the board accepted a PTA donation of $1,930 for an outdoor sensory path, approved an asbestos-abatement contract and discussed campus safety and procedures if outside law enforcement (including ICE) were to request access. Administration and counsel said schools are locked by policy and that legal counsel must verify court orders or subpoenas before complying: "No 1 comes into a school... if somebody has a valid subpoena or court order... administration has been notified to immediately contact legal counsel," Mr. Jacoby said. The board also approved purchasing laptops (Acer) and several school-out field trips and other standard vendor contracts; the CIO said technicians are certified to support the chosen devices.
Votes: the board passed the curriculum items (voice vote), business-and-operations items (roll call) and human-resources and special-education consent items (roll call). Administration said approximately $1 million in flooring replacement work is prioritized this year as part of abatement and replacement efforts; asbestos-survey results are available in each school's main office and work is monitored by on-site environmental consultants.
The board ended by noting continued collaboration with township recreation, student-representative activities at the state level, and plans to bring regulation and implementation detail back to future meetings.
