Wyoming honored for age‑friendly community garden; League highlights partnership model

The League of Minnesota Cities presented the city of Wyoming with the 2025 City of Excellence award at the July 1 council meeting, recognizing the city’s age‑friendly community garden as a model of local collaboration.
Luke Fisher, executive director of the League of Minnesota Cities, and Evan Vogel, City Administrator for Cambridge and second vice chair on the League board, described the award program and the reasons Wyoming’s garden was chosen. Staff and partners created accessible raised plots on the Fairview Lakes Medical Center campus to improve food access and provide an inclusive gathering space for seniors and residents with mobility challenges.
The League said the expansion was funded through an Age Friendly Minnesota community grant awarded by the Minnesota Department of Human Services and involved partnerships with Chisago County’s Statewide Health Improvement Partnership and Fairview. The project, League representatives said, removed barriers so residents using walkers or wheelchairs can garden and interact with neighbors; the garden has been on the Fairview campus for more than 17 years and was expanded in 2024 to add accessible plots.
Mayor Iverson and council members accepted the award and thanked staff and partner organizations who helped make the expansion possible.
