The Simi Valley Unified School District announced two personnel appointments at its Aug. 19 meeting: Reina Zapata will become principal of Royal High School, and Patty Muskowski will serve as the district's coordinator of professional learning and civic engagement.
Board members said both appointments were recommended following closed-session consideration and staff processes. Trustees noted that Zapata and Muskowski are Royal High School graduates who have served the district in multiple roles. A trustee said Zapata was the unanimous choice of Royal High School staff who participated in the selection panel.
Reina Zapata, introduced at the podium, thanked trustees and district staff and said she has worked in the district for 17 years. “I am a product of Simi Valley Unified School District and have the privilege of serving the district for the past 17 years as an educator,” Zapata said, adding she was honored to lead Royal.
The board also announced Patty Muskowski as coordinator of professional learning and civic engagement. Muskowski spoke of her 18 years with Royal High School and said she planned to expand career and technical education pathways and strengthen civic learning across the district.
Trustees praised both appointees for their institutional knowledge and commitment to students. Officials said the hires aim to provide continuity at Royal High School and to accelerate professional learning and CTE (career-technical education) supports districtwide.
The meeting proceeded to interviews for a separate agenda item (a provisional trustee appointment) before trustees completed their final action for the evening.
