Council approves second reading of ordinance raising solid-waste and recycling collection rates

The Grimes City Council approved the second reading of Ordinance 811 April 14 to amend collection charges for solid waste and recycling.
Finance staff member Marcia reviewed the background: Metro increased the city—s cost for recycling and waste services beginning in July, and for the FY27 budget the city has incorporated the full cost into rates so the proprietary fund can be self-sustaining. "Solid waste fees will increase a dollar 32 per cart, cost of $12.37 per month for each cart at a residence. Recycling fees will increase 49¢ per cart and cost $5.13 per month per cart. So the combined FY27 will be a dollar 81 per address," Marcia said.
Council conducted the second reading, moved and seconded the ordinance and approved it by roll call. Staff said the rate change moves the proprietary fund toward full-cost recovery and that prior years included a general-fund subsidy for part of those costs.
