Lost Hills deputy: May and June crimes down, e-bike enforcement stepped up

Deputy DeMatteo of the Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station told the Calabasas City Council on Aug. 13 that Part I crimes were down year over year: 17 in May 2025 (a 19% reduction) and 13 in June 2025 (an 18% reduction).

The deputy said May’s incidents included one residential burglary on North Las Virgenes Road, two robberies (one on Parkway involving alleged threats with a firearm, and another at a motel on Agora Road), vehicle burglaries and multiple retail thefts. For June, he cited three residential burglaries—two at vacant homes and one attempted entry—two vehicle burglaries, four grand-theft reports (including a stolen electric bicycle and landscape equipment) and a stolen Mercedes.

Council members praised the station’s recent interagency work in a case that led to an arrest of a suspect connected to an out-of-area homicide. “Thank you and everyone at the station for keeping us all as safe as you do,” Council Member David Shapiro said, commending combined agency efforts that produced the arrest.

Deputy DeMatteo also emphasized summer enforcement of electric motorcycles and e-bikes: “A lot of tickets have been issued this summer for electric motorcycles,” he said, warning that minors cannot legally operate motor vehicles and that parents may be cited for allowing unlicensed operation. He added that vehicles may be impounded for illegal operation and reiterated that e-bikes should not be ridden on public roadways in city limits when they do not meet legal standards.

Council Member Ed Albrecht asked about recurring motorcycle gatherings that had congested a Shell station; the deputy described organized group rides that typically move through Calabasas without criminal conduct but said officers respond when traffic or safety laws are violated.

The council did not take further action but invited the station’s new captain to attend a future meeting so the full council could meet him.
