Preston County board approves nursing vendor MOU, hospital practicums and three new buses
Summary
At its Sept. 8 meeting, the board approved an MOU with Maxim Healthcare Services to expand nursing coverage, clinical practicum agreements with Preston Memorial Hospital and several other clinical partners, and a purchase order for three new school buses totaling $410,501; the meeting also cleared policy updates and other contractual items.
The Preston County Board of Education on Sept. 8 approved several operational agreements and contracts intended to address staffing and program needs across the district.
The board approved an MOU with Maxim Healthcare Services to provide interim nursing services for the district; district leaders said the vendor posting is countywide and would be used when direct hires are not available. Assistant Superintendent Angie Varner summarized how the arrangement would function; she said vendor-supplied LPNs and RNs had been quoted at roughly $65 and $75 per hour respectively.
The board also approved a clinical practicum agreement with Preston Memorial Hospital to place Preston High School students in health-care practicum experiences and approved additional clinical affiliations for career-technical education (Kingwood Healthcare Center, AVS Mountain Land Animal Hospital, Preston County Humane Society and Preston County Animal Shelter) to support hands-on learning for online veterinary and allied-health curricula.
On procurement, the board approved purchase order #2600425 to World Wide Equipment Heritage for three new school buses for a total of $410,501. The transportation director previously reported that several new buses are on order, including one handicap-accessible bus expected in January.
A policy update (R8-39-9) permitting retired teachers to serve as substitute teachers in areas of critical need passed on first read with supporting language to comply with post-retirement employment rules; the board will submit the finalized policy to the state board of education in a future packet.
Several motions passed by voice vote during the meeting; the Maxim MOU and the bus purchase were among items recorded as passing 5–0. The board also approved an MOU with the National Youth Advocate Program (for juvenile victim-offender mediation services) by a 4–0 vote with one abstention.
What’s next: The district will finalize contracts, proceed with bus procurement under the approved purchase order, and submit the updated retired-teacher policy to the West Virginia State Board of Education for review.
