Greeley County commissioners choose leadership, set 2017 policies and make appointments

At its Jan. 10, 2017 organizational meeting the Greeley County Board of Commissioners elected Michael Goldfish chairman and Doug Wrede vice‑chair, set courthouse hours and meeting dates, designated the county newspaper and website for official publication, and made a slate of department appointments and policy decisions including mileage and burial allowances.
Michael Goldfish was elected chairman of the Greeley County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 10, 2017 after a brief nomination process in which the board initially nominated Doug Wrede and then elected Goldfish. Joe Leslie was later elected vice‑chair. County Clerk Mindy Grossart presided as temporary chair during the nominations.
The board set courthouse hours at 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday (open over the noon hour for customers), scheduled regular meetings for the second and last Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m. unless otherwise advertised, and designated the Greeley Citizen as the official county newspaper. The board also declared the county website (www.greeleycounty.ne.gov) an official means of publication.
Appointments approved by unanimous votes included Chris Hayes as County Surveyor; Janet Wood as County School Superintendent; Mark Bauer as Emergency Manager; Lance Harter as Highway Superintendent; Franz Trumler as Planning & Zoning Administrator (with a $25 monthly phone reimbursement); and Walter Bjorklund as Weed Superintendent. The board also approved a list of banking depositories and authorized the County Treasurer to invest idle funds appropriately.
On policy items the board set the county mileage reimbursement rate at 53.5¢ per mile effective Jan. 1, 2017 (consistent with Section 81‑1176 as noted in the minutes), and allowed the Sheriff’s Department to charge an additional 3¢ when serving papers. The board approved a county burial allowance policy of $1,500 for a casket burial or $1,000 for cremation, and directed that any other available resources (savings, insurance, Social Security funeral benefits) be applied against the county allowance.
Routine government business completed at the same meeting included waiving the reading and approving minutes from Dec. 27, 2016; accepting the Six‑Month Fund Balance and Delinquent Tax reports from the Treasurer; reviewing monthly reports from county offices; and approving payroll and vendor claims. Chairman Goldfish said he would consult the County Surveyor to clarify a constituent’s questions about acreage taxed after a presentation from the Assessor’s office.
The board adjourned after taking the organizational votes and approving the routine items.
