Ionia Public Schools board approves tax resolution, NEOLA policy updates and policy rescissions

The Ionia Public Schools Board of Education voted unanimously Nov. 17 to approve the district's Annual Summer Tax Resolution and multiple NEOLA policy updates and rescissions, and received a Sinking Fund update showing $9,507,615.19 in revenue and $8,399,064.31 in expenditures to date.
The board, meeting at the Ionia Educational Center, opened at 7:00 p.m. and recorded all seven members present. Secretary Marhofer moved to approve the meeting agenda, with Treasurer Ellis supporting; the motion carried 7-0.
Finance Director Jammie Sprank presented the Sinking Fund activity through Oct. 31, 2025 and told the board the district "had a clean audit this year." Sprank reported $9,507,615.19 in Sinking Fund revenue and $8,399,064.31 in expenditures and said bond funding tasks will be broken into three series.
On formal action, Trustee Ray Shippey moved to approve the Annual Summer Tax Resolution; Vice President Ken Baker supported the motion. A roll-call vote recorded ayes from Shippey, Timothy Montgomery, Trustee Sieman, Treasurer Ellis, Secretary Marhofer, Vice President Baker and President Yokom; the resolution passed 7-0.
The board also approved fall 2025 NEOLA policy updates (motion by Shippey, supported by Treasurer Ellis) and NEOLA non-discrimination updates (motion by Trustee Timothy Montgomery, supported by Shippey), each by unanimous votes. Administrative Assistant Rebekah Little summarized both sets of updates as second readings before the board moved to approve them.
Little explained the adoption of consolidated policy language that allows the district to rescind several older NEOLA policies because their provisions were incorporated elsewhere. Trustee Sieman moved and Treasurer Ellis supported rescinding the listed NEOLA policies; that motion also carried 7-0.
Superintendent Benjamin Gurk highlighted district activities and student achievements, including the Ionia Theater opening this Thursday with a production of Mean Girls, a Veterans Day art contest whose winners were recognized, and several athletic honors. HR Director Melissa Weller presented the Educators of the Month and announced recent support-staff hires including special education paraprofessionals and a food services team member.
President Yokom adjourned the meeting at 7:26 p.m. The board set its next regular meeting for Dec. 15, 2025, at 7 p.m. in room 304 of the Ionia Educational Center.
