One board member said the gym is a usable facility for the community and recommended giving the Blue Whale Improvement Association time to produce a business plan and proof of finances rather than proceeding immediately with demolition.
Administrators explained practical constraints — utilities, connected structures and bid logistics — and warned that rebidding could take roughly six weeks and require an alternate bid structure to preserve volume pricing. The board voted to rescind part of the prior demolition action, rebid the project including alternates that would allow the gym to be spared if the community proposal met requirements, and set a June 1 deadline for the community's submission. The motion carried with a 5–0 vote.
Board members emphasized the need for evidence of funds and a structural/architectural plan from the community group before the district would transfer or donate the gym property. Maintenance and financial staff will manage the rebid and include alternate line items reflecting the board’s direction.
