John Hughes, a community member who spoke during the public comment period at the March 5, 2025 Inglewood Unified School District board meeting, praised students for taking a proactive role in discussions about merging high schools and urged the district to adopt an equitable memorandum of understanding.
“I’m promoting that. We put forth a MOU that I believe promotes that. It has to be equitable,” Hughes said, urging the board and the Inglewood Teachers Association to ensure that any consolidation preserves both schools’ cultures and legacies and does not leave one community feeling slighted.
Hughes also told the board that students were emphasizing three priorities—safety, security and care—and said adults should follow their example of collaboration rather than becoming entrenched in opposing positions.
The board heard two comments from Hughes in succession: his first focused on certificated staff and the need for timely information about affected positions; his second emphasized student leadership and the MOU. The presiding officer closed the public comment period after two speakers. Board members also used the meeting to acknowledge Women's History Month and to pay tribute to Dr. Shauna Dinkins of Lynnwood Unified before adjourning at 5:22 p.m.
