Beardstown council approves street closure for church event, sets election filing period

At its Sept. 3, 2024 regular meeting, the Beardstown City Council approved several routine items, including a street closure request for a church event and an announcement of upcoming municipal filing dates.
A motion by Alderperson Mary Davis, seconded by Alderperson Eric Harbin, approved a request from St. Alexis Catholic Church to close Sixth Street between Washington Street and Lafayette Street on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; the motion passed unanimously by voice vote. The minutes record the exact closure location and hours.
Earlier in the meeting, Alderperson Eric Harbin moved, with Alderperson Lisa Buhlig seconding, to dispense with the reading of the Aug. 20, 2024 minutes and approve them as published; that motion passed unanimously by voice vote. Alderperson Mary Davis moved to approve the consent agenda, seconded by Alderperson Eric Harbin, and the consent agenda was approved unanimously by roll call vote under the omnibus vote designation.
The council received departmental reports for the Water Superintendent (gallons pumped for the month and year totals), Police Chief (calls answered, arrests, traffic stops and year totals) and Fire Chief (monthly and year totals). Code Enforcement and Zoning Officer reports for August were attached to the minutes. No substantive debate on the reports is recorded.
Mayor Tim Harris informed residents that petitions are available at City Hall for the offices of mayor, city clerk, city treasurer and multiple alderperson seats; the filing period is Nov. 12–18, 2024. The meeting adjourned at 6:55 p.m. on a motion by Alderperson Mary Davis, seconded by Alderperson Eric Harbin.
