Committee approves seismic refraction study to evaluate bedrock at Teacher Middle School site

Summary
The committee authorized a seismic refraction survey by SLR for the preferred east site of the Teacher Middle School to map bedrock ahead of underground work; the study was approved for $37,720 and the motion passed 11-0.
The building committee approved a seismic refraction study for the Teacher Middle School east site (site B) to better define bedrock conditions that could influence building placement and foundation design.
The committee voted to authorize SLR to perform seismic refraction work, described by consultant Jim as a grid of seismic points spaced every five feet across the borings to define the subsurface profile. Jim said the work goes beyond the base contract and provides additional information to help the contractor and designer understand subsurface conditions. The scope and estimated cost were recorded at $37,720.
Committee members discussed site selection: the east site (site B) was described as preferable in prior presentations but more topographically sloped and closer to bedrock, while the north site is flatter because it is made up of imported fill. The consultant and Dan said using the east site would allow the committee to retain existing play fields and infrastructure where possible but that advancing eastward increases the likelihood of encountering rock.
Sheila Hayes moved to approve PSS T-001 (seismic refraction) for state project 104-0122 and Mark Kullos seconded; the motion passed by voice vote, 11-0.
The seismic refraction results will inform final footing locations and structural design decisions; staff said they will report findings back to the committee.
