Satellite Beach Youth Council elects Alex LaFortune chair, Charlotte Barnes vice chair and sets outreach, environmental priorities

The Satellite Beach Youth Council held its first official meeting on Oct. 28, 2019, electing Alex LaFortune as chair and Charlotte Barnes as vice chair and moving quickly into planning outreach and environmental projects.
During nominations, Charlotte Barnes described leadership experience and interest in the chair role, saying she had observed RobertRules in other organizations. McKenzie Parson moved to nominate Alex LaFortune for chair and a second was recorded; the motion passed by voice vote. Alex then led the nomination and election of Charlotte Barnes as vice chair.
Webb Pierce, the city clerk, briefed members on meeting procedure and legal obligations under FloridaSunshine Law, telling the students that meetings must be open to the public and that board members must avoid discussing official items outside meetings. "Robert's Rules of Order is generally the standard," Pierce said, stressing orderly discussion, motions, and the rights of the majority and minority.
Members committed to building a public presence and identified priorities for the first year. They discussed social-media outreach (several members favored Instagram while noting Facebook reaches parents), volunteer projects such as lagoon cleanups and mangrove plantings, and creating a youth-council T-shirt. Serena Videla, who introduced herself as an alternate member, offered to serve as secretary: "I have previous experience in that regard," she said, explaining her work as a club secretary.
Council members also identified short-term outreach: staffing a table at the Ocean Reef Festival in early December and preparing designs and posts to present at the next meeting. Staff repeatedly warned that substantive coordination about city business should be brought back into public meetings to comply with Sunshine Law rules.
The council agreed to continue the discussion at its next meeting in November, with members preparing mission-statement ideas, project proposals and shirt designs to bring for formal consideration.
