Chair Jarvis outlines housing sites, FAA apron plan and large events response plan

Chair Jarvis reported several municipal and regional initiatives the city is developing, including housing, airport planning and event coordination.
On housing, Jarvis said the housing committee identified three locations within city limits that appear suitable for residential development, with a goal to build roughly 11 quality homes. Jarvis emphasized land-acquisition discussions are ongoing and nothing is finalized: "it can't be stated yet until we're 100% sure that they're willing to sell the land... then we can go to the next phase." The committee has conducted local outreach and is exploring acquisition opportunities.
On airport planning, Jarvis said the airport layout plan for an apron expansion was submitted to the Federal Aviation Administration; Corey Gaston from Kirk Michael confirmed FAA approval of the contract for Precision Concrete Services, but the city is waiting for funding before work proceeds. "We're currently waiting for the funding," Jarvis said.
Jarvis also outlined community events and public-safety planning. The Dream Playground fundraising event is planned for July 19 at the Vets Auditorium with a live band and silent auction. For the Lucas Oil event at Shelby County Speedway in July, Jarvis said an incident response plan is in development and will include EMS, the sheriff's office, fire department, Chamber, EMA and hospital outreach in anticipation of a crowd estimated at "somewhere around 4,500 to 5,000 people." Jarvis said the incident-response group will coordinate traffic, parking and on-site medical and safety resources.
Jarvis closed by noting related regional and chamber activities, outreach for hotel/motel advertising funds and efforts to recruit larger events to Harlan.
