Benzie County places Maples operations millage renewal on August 4, 2026 ballot

The Benzie County Board of Commissioners voted on March 24 to place a renewal millage question for the Benzie County Medical Care Facility (The Maples) on the August 4, 2026 primary ballot.
Commissioner Gary Sauer moved and Commissioner Bob Roelofs seconded adoption of Resolution 2026-011. The motion carried by roll call vote; all present commissioners voted yes and Commissioner Art Jeannot was excused. Megan Garza, executive director of The Maples, was present and urged support; she noted that the facility "has been 98% census" since 2022 and praised staff who "stepped up" during the recent storm when generators were used to keep residents powered.
The resolution authorizes the clerk to submit the millage renewal question to the electorate at the August 4, 2026 primary election; the clerk and elections staff will proceed with the required ballot preparation steps and filings. Commissioners accepted the presentation and adopted the ballot language; no vote to oppose the placement was recorded.
Because millage questions require election administration steps, the county clerk will handle filing and procedural deadlines ahead of the August election. The board took no additional substantive action on The Maples at the meeting beyond placing the renewal on the ballot and receiving the operational update from Garza.
