Executive Director Scott delivered the parks and recreation closing report at the Youth Commission’s Feb. 23 special meeting, outlining upcoming programs, staff-led events and a council-bound proposal.
Scott highlighted program schedules and outreach: an emerging lifeguard program will run Feb. 24–Apr. 28 on Tuesdays and Thursdays for ages 16–28; adult kickball registration runs Feb. 15–Mar. 15 with the season beginning Mar. 25 at Thornton Park; girls’ basketball registration is opening with a partnership that will give teams an opportunity to attend a Los Angeles Sparks event; and the department is organizing teen excursions and a fun run. Scott also said hiring fairs will be held Mar. 19 and Apr. 9 at the Jerome Center to recruit part-time and seasonal staff.
Scott said Brew at the Zoo is expanding (he reported about 21 breweries signed up) and encouraged commissioners to promote department events. He also previewed an item coming to City Council: “There will be a proposal to city council for a management agreement out at Riverview Golf Course,” Scott said, and asked commissioners to support the proposal when it is scheduled.
Scott said he would provide more detail and meet with commissioners about the Riverview item when it reaches the council agenda. The presentation was informational; no formal action was taken by the Commission on the Riverview proposal at this meeting.
