Summary
Staff reported Nicholson Park is almost finished and that the city will issue a call for muralists with $25,000 allocated; commissioners reviewed design, permitting plans, the parks master plan timeline and public‑input process leading to council adoption in April.
Staff updated the commission that Nicholson Park construction is essentially complete and described next steps for public art and for the parks master plan.
The staff report said Nicholson Park is roughly "98% done," with a handful of punch‑list and permitting items remaining and a second phase (a community center) scheduled to follow. Staff said the city will issue a call for artists for a mural at Nicholson Park; the commission was told there is $25,000 identified to go toward the artist for that piece.
Staff also reviewed other CIP work: larger athletic‑field renovations are underway, Lytle Creek Community Center restroom replacement is planned, and La Plaza Park's architectural designs are moving forward toward an RFQ for construction. Commissioners asked about mural length and placement; staff said the city will consider smaller phased murals or a single mural on a brick wall that separates the park from the neighborhood and that the $25,000 allocation will be used to launch the work.
Separately, staff reminded the commission that the parks master plan is being finalized and will go to city council for adoption on April 1; community input meetings were described as project‑specific, and staff said compiled inputs will be shared.
The commission asked staff to circulate design material and to ensure equity between historical‑preservation goals and public‑art objectives when finalizing selection materials and artist contracts.
