Council members held an extensive discussion on April 14 about employee wages, job descriptions and retention risks. Several members said city employees are paid less than comparable municipalities and recommended a combination of a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) and merit-based increases.
One councilmember said the city’s staffing distribution raised questions: "We've got 6 employees work at the museum, and we have 5 public works. I mean, is that proportion right?" Members suggested department heads prepare job-description updates and that employees write down duties as part of the evaluation process.
The council directed staff to schedule a dedicated work session in the next month (or the month after) to develop wage and job-description proposals for inclusion in the budget process.
Next steps: staff to convene a work session, gather job descriptions, and return with recommended COLA and evaluation-based increases for council consideration.
