Petition proponents and staff said many residential streets were originally platted at 80 feet, a width that speakers called excessive for current needs. One resident explained the original platting reflected turn requirements from the 19th century and that modern streets would be more functional at roughly 45 to 50 feet. "80 feet is definitely... overbuilt," a speaker said during the discussion.
Council and staff discussed trade-offs including existing utilities that could end up on private property if right-of-way is reduced, the need for formal surveys, possible special assessments to finance survey costs, and minimum pavement widths recommended by fire officials. Staff emphasized the council vote was to accept the petition and begin a public process — it was not authorization to remove roads immediately.
Next steps: staff will schedule public hearings and workshops to review drainage/master-planning concerns and return with options for formal consideration.
