The Little Falls City Council voted Oct. 6 to install a marked crosswalk and associated curb/pedestrian ramp on 11th Street SE near a mobile home park and school, with a construction cost estimated by staff to be under $5,000.
City staff explained that the crossing would primarily require painted lines, a sign and a short concrete pedestrian curb and ramp that the city’s crews could construct. "What we're looking at is essentially, paint for the crosswalk as well as some concrete for the pedestrian curb ... it's gonna be less than that $5,000 mark," the staff member said. Council discussed outreach to the school and whether to include the school in any cost-sharing; staff said existing Safe Routes to School funds are depleted and using that program for this small project would be inefficient.
Council approved the motion so staff could begin work and also follow up with the school about potential participation. The city will use in-house crews for the curb and ADA ramp work, and staff estimated the total cost would remain under the $5,000 threshold.
